Awards and Juries

Awards for the films from the Official selection - Competition:

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has been classified by FIAPF as a non-specialized festival with a feature film competition. Only films made after January 1 of the previous year which haven´t been previously shown in the competition of another international film festival may be included; films selected are generally world, international or European premieres.

The award Grand Prix - Crystal Globe
Since the very beginning the Grand Prix has been the Crystal Globe; although its form has often changed. As of the 35th Karlovy Vary IFF 2000 the Crystal Globe has taken on a new look: now the figure of a woman stands raising a crystal ball.

The Grand Jury is obliged to present the following prizes in the Official selection - Competition:

• Grand Prix - Crystal Globe for best feature film and 25,000 USD awarded to the best feature film (The financial award is shared equally by the director and producer of the award-winning film)
• Special Jury Prize and 15,000 USD (The financial award is shared equally by the director and producer of the award-winning film)
• Best Director Award
• Best Actress Award
• Best Actor Award
• The jury may also present two Special jury mentions.

East of the West Award

The official competitive section East of the West screens films made after January 1 of the previous year. The East of the West Award (and 20 000 USD), chosen by its own five-member jury, will be conferred at the gala closing ceremonies when the main festival prizes are awarded.

Grand Prix for Best Documentary Film

The Documentary Jury is obliged to award the following prizes in the Documentary films in Competition:

• Best documentary film under 30 minutes (and 5 000 USD)
• Best documentary film over 30 minutes (and 5 000 USD)
• The jury may also present two Special jury mentions (one in each category).

Independent Camera Award

in co-operation with Czech Television the best film presented in the official competition Forum of Independents will be awarded with the Independent Camera Award

Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema

Every year the Karlovy Vary IFF endeavours to award at least two exceptional figures in Czech and foreign film who have made their indelible mark on the development of world cinema.

Festival President’s Award

The Festival President’s Award is given to actors, directors, and producers who have contributed in a fundamental way to the development of film, not merely in their own countries but around the world.

Audience Award

The official juries will not be the only ones voting: audience is able to choose their own best film at the Karlovy Vary IFF. The award will be conferred upon the winner during the festival´s gala closing ceremony.
