MASTER CLASSES – MEET THE AUTHORS

For the forth time at the Karlovy Vary IFF, regular meetings have been organized with directors, actors, and other filmmakers who will present their work as part of the festival program. Master Classes will be exclusively in English unless otherwise indicated.

July 3

Masterclass István SzabóMaster Class with István Szabó, moderated by Gideon Bachmann (Vox Humana Session)

Hungarian film director who’s Mephisto won an Academy Award, occasional actor and this year´s President of the Grand Jury will be first guest of the Vox Humana Session. Vox Humana – The Voice Bank was created through the initiative of journalist Gideon Bachmann. It collects, stores, enhances, digitizes and distributes sound recordings of the voices of famous artistic personalities. For the enlarging and updating of the Cinema Collection Vox Humana will cooperate with Film festivals in various areas of the world. The first festival, which will host this project, is Karlovy Vary IFF. István Szabó and Gideon Bachmann will talk not only about films, but on common memories, and general issues of creation, life attitudes and state of the world today.

Masterclass Denis VilleneuveMaster Class with Denis Villeneuve, moderated by Marcel Arbeit

Denis Villeneuve is one of the most respected creators of contemporary Canadian cinema. Even the Mid-REW FFWD film from 1994 was screened at numerous festivals and won a special jury prize at the Locarno Festival. The festival presents a full show of his work including the last film Incendies, which came closer to the nomination for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

Masterclass Monte HellmanMaster Class with Monte Hellman, moderated by Gideon Bachmann (Vox Humana Session)

Monte Helman is director, producer, and editor who can be called one of the most interesting creative talents of the New Hollywood generation. Monte Hellman will be the second guest of the Vox Humana Sessions which will be recorded for audio archive; he will discuss his work and life attitudes with journalist Gideon Bachmann. At Karlovy Vary IFF he is presenting his new film Road to Nowhere which is shown in the section Another View.

July 5

Master Class with Brian Newman and Ted Hope (The Future of Film Panel)

Masterclass Brian Newman, Ted HopeDigital technology has forced radical changes on the media industries. What we’ve seen happen in music and publishing is now hitting film, and the changes will likely be more profound as our world becomes increasingly mediated by the visual image. Pioneering producer Ted Hope (Todd Solondz's DARK HORSE, AMERICAN SPLENDOR, and 21 GRAMS) and digital thought leader Brian Newman (former CEO, Tribeca Film Institute) will lead a participatory dialogue with the audience about finding the keys to success in this future.

Master Class with Martin Donovan, moderated by Mike Goodridge

Masterclass Martin DonovanMartin Donovan is an American film and theater actor, a long-term cooperator with director Hal Hartley on such films as Amateur and The Book of Life, both screened at Karlovy Vary. He also appeared in The Portrait of a Lady and in Christopher Nolan’s Insomnia. The writer-director tragicomedy Collaborator is his directorial debut in film. His Master Class will be dedicated to actor's first time directing experience.

Conversation with Young Greek Filmmakers (Maria Drandaki, Syllas Tzoumerkas , Alexis Alexiou , Argyris Papadimitropoulos ), moderated by Dimitris Kerkinos

Masterclass Syllas Tzoumerkas, Argyris Papadimitropoulos, Maria Drandaki, Alexis AlexiouConversation with directors Syllas Tzoumerkas, Alexis Alexiou, Argyris Papadimitropoulos and producer Maria Drandaki about their films shown in the section Young Greek Cinema and about the phenomenon of contemporary Young Greek Film.

Lech Majewski, moderated by Tomáš Baldýnský

Masterclass Lech MajewskiLech Majewski is a film and stage director, screenwriter and author, and is regarded as a leading filmmaker of our time. In 2006 the Museum of Modern Art in New York organized a major retrospective of his work; Majewski was the first Polish artist to be honored in this way. At this year´s festival he presents a new film The Mill and The Cross which is shown in the section Another View. Topics such a bridging the gap between art and film or symbolic nature of the film language will be discussed within his Master Class.

July 8

Master Class with Jerzy Stuhr, moderated by Krystyna Krauze

Masterclass Jerzy StuhrJerzy Stuhr is leading Polish actor, dramatist, screenwriter, director and also a professor at the Academy for the Dramatic Arts in Krakow. At the festival he accompanies Nanni Moretti’s film Habeas Papam which is screened in the Horizons section. Stuhr will be talking about his longstanding carrier as actor and director. Meeting will be held in Polish and Czech without English translation.

Hollywood Panel 2010For the fourth time the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will organize the much anticipated “Cooperation with Hollywood” panel. The goal of the event is to bridge the gap between Hollywood and Europe and bring together the skills, experience and talent from both sides of the Atlantic. Prominent representatives of the American film industry will offer their European counterparts useful insight into the workings of the Hollywood production machine. The discussion will allow both sides to gain important information for successful cooperation.

This year’s subject will give the foreign filmmakers an invaluable insight into what it takes to make their dreams and aspiration reality.

SPIRITUALITY AND FILM - DISCUSSION PANEL

Press Conference Hall, Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 4PM

One of the unofficial juries of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is the ecumenical jury. What is the point of view of its members and how do they evaluate films? This question and more will be answered at the panel discussion “Spirituality and Film.” The participants will touch on the history and role of ecumenical juries at film festival, spiritual perception of films or the possibility of using film as a spiritual tool for personal development. The guests will also discuss selected films featured at 46th KVIFF.
Panel participants will include Jaromír Blažejovský (CZ), Reinhold Zwick (Germany), Waltraud Verlaguet (France), Jes Nysten (Denmark) and other experts in the field.
The event will be open to film professionals, journalists and the public.
