MASTER CLASSES – MEET THE AUTHORS


For the third time at the Karlovy Vary IFF, regular meetings have been organized with directors, actors, and other filmmakers who will present their work as part of the festival program. The meetings will take place afternoons, primarily on the first floor of Thermal Hotel in the Radio 1 Lounge.

Master Classes will be exclusively in English unless otherwise indicated.

Master Class with Thelma Schoonmaker

July 3, 5 pm, Radio 1 Lounge

Master Class with Thelma Schoonmaker: American editor, three-time Oscar winner (Raging Bull, The Aviator, and The Departed), longtime collaborator of Martin Scorsese, and wife of the late Michael Powell. The Master Class will focus on the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger that will be screened at this year’s festival, as well as on the costly digital restoration of The Red Shoes, made possible through a contribution from Martin Scorsese’s foundation.

Master Class with Eli Craig

July 4, 2 pm, Radio 1 Lounge

Master Class with Eli Craig: American director whose debut Tucker & Dale vs Evil, a comic tribute to horror flicks that offers a twist on the stereotypes that made Friday the 13th famous, will screen in the Another View section.

Master Class with Goran Paskaljevič

Master Class with legendary Serbian director Goran Paskaljevič, whose newest film Honeymoons is presented in the Horizons section.

Master Class with Kevin Macdonald

July 6, 2 pm, Radio 1 Lounge

Master Class with Scottish director and documentarist Kevin Macdonald (Touching the Void, One Day in September, The Last King of Scotland, State of Play). Kevin Macdonald is grandson of Emeric Pressburger and he is here at the festival to present the films in the Tribute to Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

Master Class with Michel Ciment

July 7, 5 pm, Cinema B, Thermal Hotel

Master Class with Michel Ciment: the noted French film critic and editor-in-chief of Positif magazine will be honored with the program section Tribute to Michel Ciment. He and Steven Gaydos, executive editor of Variety magazine, will discuss the topic “The Art of Sharing Movies”.

Master Class with Brian Trenchard-Smith

July 8, 2 pm, Radio 1 Lounge

Master Class with Brian Trenchard-Smith: crucial creative personality of Australia’s new wave of pulp movies in the 1970s and 1980s, whose films Dead End Drive-In and The Man from Hong Kong will be presented in the Midnight Screenings section: Ozploitation! The Master Class will be devoted to Brian Trenchard-Smith’s works, as well as to the entire wave of Australian genre production, admired by Quentin Tarantino among many others.

Master Class with Karel Vachek

July 9, 5 pm, Radio 1 Lounge

Master Class with controversial documentarist and pedagogue at Prague film school FAMU Karel Vachek. Master Class will be dedicated not only to his new film Tmář a jeho rod and retrospective at the festival.


INTERFACING WITH HOLLYWOOD: CHANGING PARADIGMS

The successful INTERFACING WITH HOLLYWOOD panel discussion returns for its third year, creating a bridge between Hollywood and Europe in which knowledge and talent can flow both ways. It provides a forum for European film-makers to gain insight into how Hollywood works and the panel members can share their knowledge and meet new and established film-makers from Europe. This year’s discussion will look at the various stages of getting a film made in Hollywood and the how the movie industry is reacting to new challenges in production and distribution.
