They are between 20 and 25 years old, have finished school and it seems they’ve got their whole lives ahead of them. The world offers many opportunities but each must discover for him or herself the right way to tackle life and love. Summer in Berlin brings a personal crisis to each of the ten young people concerned in the story. Feelings of freedom can be too intoxicating and lead merely to the urge to devour everything in sight. Vulnerability hides behind a mask of cynicism. Dreams created within the four walls of an apartment do not come true. The young people stand in each other’s way, real emotions are ground down and all of them gradually lose control of their lives.
Martin Gypkens (b. 1969, Bonn) left for New York after finishing school, and there gained his first film experience. In 1992-96 he worked as a prop designer for various productions in Berlin. In 1993 he directed Unidentifizierte Leichenteile und das wahre Wesen der Liebe in Bonn, and three years later enrolled in a script editing program at the Konrad Wolf Academy of Film and Television in Potsdam. He wrote the feature films Life Calling (Schluss mit lustig, 2001) and Tödliche Freundschaften, and several documentaries (Die Falschen, Brautkleid bleibt Brautkleid, Papas). We is his writing-directing feature debut.
