Synopsis

True Enough

True Enough

Anne is an attractive woman who has trouble trying to divide her time between her demanding job as a television host and her family – her adolescent son and second husband Thomas. Her world is far from perfect since both she and those around her are unable to juggle their professional and private lives with any degree of success. Especially her pregnant colleague Caroline, for whom Thomas has a soft spot, and whose problems with her current partner Marc, Anne’s first husband, are simply out of control. Then Anne meets Vincent, a good-looking Parisian homosexual, and the encounter changes her life: she finds selfless compassion in this aging intellectual, a man committed to bringing former celebrities back to the world stage. Yet, in this thorny web of emotional, sexual and professional relationships, what is true and what is merely an (un)forgiving lie? An element of harmony is introduced to this tragicomic kaleidoscope through the jazz rhythms of neglected singer Pauline Anderton, the subject of a television documentary being made by Anne and Vincent. The film offers great performances from Karin Viard and André Dussollier. Director Karmann acquits himself well in the role of the heroine’s husband Thomas.

About the director

True Enough

Sam Karmann (b. 1953, Port Said, Egypt) worked as an actor from the early 1980s, appearing primarily in television series (e.g. the hit crime series Navarro, 1985–95, in which he played Inspector Barrada). He took on smaller roles in the drama La balance (dir. Bob Swaim, 1982), the crime film Train d’enfer (dir. Roger Hanin, 1984) and the comedy La cité de la peur (dir. Alain Berbérian, 1994). He played the role of the director in the tragicomedy Le goût des autres (dir. Agnès Jaoui, 2000), which received an Oscar nomination. He debuted in 1992 with a short feature film based on his own screenplay, Omnibus, for which he won an Oscar, the Palme d’Or at Cannes and a BAFTA award, all for Best Short Film. He also directed the comedy Kennedy et moi (1999 – European Film Award nomination for Discovery of the Year), the tragicomic tale À la petite semaine (2003) and the short films Issues de secours (2006) and Chant prénatal (2006).
