Majority or Minority Co-productions? Debating the Possibilities of Effective Support for Czecho-Slovak Films

Representatives from the Czech Film Fund and the Slovak Audiovisual Fund will discuss the ins and outs of co-production support schemes with filmmakers from both countries. The main question to be addressed is: how to finance more ambitious Czecho-Slovak co-production projects while still protecting smaller national productions? The debate will also explore the possibility of supporting projects that are equally financed and/or creatively developed by both sides, the definition of “minority co-production,” and the inter-compatibility of the two countries’ production support schemes.
Artisans in Focus Variety Panel

While legendary film stars and great auteurs of global cinema are regularly celebrated, less heralded are the geniuses behind the camera. In a historic new event at this year's Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Artisans in Focus will spotlight the brilliant individuals who create the images and sounds that form the magic of movies. This panel of internationally recognized creative professionals, hosted by Variety and in partnership with Barrandov Studio and Czech Anglo Productions, will illuminate crafts such as cinematography, production and costume design, editing - and explore how artisans work with directors, producers and actors. Moderated by Variety's Peter Caranicas, the session will also survey the future of filmmaking as the digital revolution transforms the industry. Cinema professionals and serious fans will mark their calendars for this major new KVIFF track on the fine art of collaboration in filmmaking.

Promotion and Visibility of European Audiovisual Works

Among other things, the LUX Film Prize and the Creative Europe programme strive to improve the visibility and circulation of European films throughout Europe. How should the promotion of European films be boosted? Is the first step to create a legal framework establishing a level playing field that would help to foster cultural diversity...? The panel is organised by the LUX Film Prize of the European Parliament and Creative Europe Desk CZ – MEDIA, in partnership with the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Czech Film Fund Happy Hour: Meet members of the Council of the Czech Film Fund

In February 2017, the Czech Film Commission and the Czech Film Center joined the Czech Film Fund, the central institution responsible for financing and fostering the development of the Czech audiovisual industry. Each happy hour event has a different theme: You can meet the members of the Fund’s board of directors to hear about their strategies and priorities in evaluating projects; discuss the Fund’s future plans with its director; ask the Czech Film Commission and representatives of the Czech Republic’s regional film offices what they can offer filmmakers; or visit with the Czech Film Center and learn about the current state of Czech cinema. LUX Film Prize Unveils Top Ten Films

During the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the European Parliament’s LUX Film Prize will unveil the ten films in its official selection for the 2017 awards. Also on this occasion, the Audience Mention from the last edition will be announced. Of the ten films in the Official Selection, three will be subtitled into the EU’s 24 official languages and travel across Europe during LUX Film Days.
