Synopsis
Office clerk Mr. Yoshii has moved into a house in the suburbs near his boss Mr. Iwasaki. His two sons must face bullying by a gang of kids from their street. One of the boys is Mr. Iwasaki´s son, Taro, but in the end the brothers gain the gang´s respect with the help of the local bovver boy. Their natural pride in their father is seriously damaged during the projection of one of Mr. Iwasaki´s amateur films: Mr. Yoshii is seen making a fool of himself in front of the camera for his boss´ amusement. Being ushered into the complex world of adult relationships and social hierarchy represents the dramatic plot of Ozu´s first major film which, with its mainly comic style, pits children´s innocence against adult hypocrisy. Some of the motifs of this silent film recurred in Ozu´s Good Morning.
