Synopsis

The dusky light floods the tired faces of men working in the deep coalseams. Pick-axes flicker, coal pours from shovels into tin buckets. More men take them out and transfer the coal to sacks. The men warm up food by a small fire. The flickering flames drive away the darkness and reveal the bitter creases on their scowling faces.... The closing title states that around 5,000 unemployed labourers are illegally mining coal in the closed-down mines near Walbrzych. Some of them die there.

About the director

Filip Marczewski is a student of the Lodz Film School (PWSFTViT). Last year the Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia screened his student film Cyrano (2004), about actors from a provincial theatre, which maintains that no one has the right to rid people of their illusions.
