Synopsis

Gulf War veteran Jack Stark returns home to Vermont after recuperating from a gunshot wound to the head; but he still suffers from memory loss. After he is accused of killing a police officer, he is placed in a psychiatric hospital and submitted to a controversial method of treatment by one Dr Becker. The good doctor straps Jack in a straightjacket, administers experimental drugs and locks him in a body drawer in the basement morgue. Under the drugs’ influence, Stark’s thoughts project into the future, and there he meets Jackie. He also finds out that he’ll be dead in four days. He and Jackie, of course, then try to outfox Death. A blend of thriller, crime drama, romance and sci-fi, The Jacket stars Adrien Brody (The Pianist) and Keira Knigthley (Bend It Like Beckham, Pirates of the Caribbean).

About the director

John Maybury (b. 1958, London), painter, writer and director, launched into filmmaking at the end of the seventies. He was set and costume designer on Derek Jarman’s Jubilee, and he cooperated with him on The Last of England and The Tempest as well. He has had a turn at promotional films and music videos (Sinéad O’Connor, Boy George), and has also worked in television. Remembrance of Things Fast: True Stories Visual Lies (1993) took a Teddy at the Berlinale in 1994. He was also praised for the feature Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon (1998), awarded at the festival in Edinburgh.
