After leaving secondary school, he appeared on stage in London’s West End, and eventually worked with prestigious ensembles such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. For his work in Jean Cocteau’s tragicomedy Les Parents terribles, he was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Newcomer.

Andrew and Kevin Macdonald, grandsons of Hungarian-born screenwriter Emeric Pressburger, will also be among the honored guests at this year’s KVIFF. Accomplished British producer Andrew Macdonald worked his magic on the creation of Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, and The Beach

Kevin Macdonald, Oscar-winning director of the documentary One Day in September (1999), gained further renown for the drama The Last King of Scotland and for the thriller State of Play starring Russell Crow and Ben Affleck. He is the author of a biography on his grandfather entitled Emeric Pressburger: The Life and Death of a Screenwriter. 

 



Nikita Mikhalkov

Nikita Mikhalkov, Russia

After studying acting at the Boris Shchukin Theater Institute and film direction at Moscow’s VGIK film school, Nikita Mikhalkov began his career as a director with the films At Home Among Strangers, Stranger at Home (1974), A Slave of Love (1975), Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano (1976), Five Evenings (1978), and Oblomov (1979).

Thelma Schoonmaker, world-renowned editor and Martin Scorsese’s longtime collaborator, is considered one of the most knowledgeable authorities on the work of Powell and Pressburger. The three-time Oscar winner (Raging Bull, The Aviator, and The Departed) and wife of the late Michael Powell will introduce the Czech Premiere of the digitally restored print of the celebrated The Red Shoes at Karlovy Vary.
