Paul Schrader will be a guest at the 44th Karlovy Vary IFF

June 23, 2009, 11:00 AM

Celebrated French director Patrice Chéreau will be presenting his films in Karlovy Vary during the first weekend of the festival, while distinctive American filmmaker Alan Rudolph will introduce five films during the second half of the festival. Famous screenwriter and director Paul Schrader will also attend the 44th KVIFF with his new film.

Originally a film critic, author of the screenplays for Martin Scorsese’s films Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, he will present his latest film as a director, an adaptation of the controversial novel by Yoram Kaniuk, Adam Resurrected (2008).

Michigan-born Paul Schrader got together with his brother Leonard in 1975 to write the script for the film The Yakuza (dir. Sydney Pollack), which brought him recognition among the young directors of the so-called New Hollywood generation. He worked with Brian De Palma on the film Obsession (1976), while his screenplay for the film Taxi Driver (1976) by Martin Scorsese secured him not only his first nomination for a Golden Globe, but, above all, the chance to debut as a director with the film Blue Collar (1978). He wrote another three scripts for Scorsese; apart from the famous Raging Bull (1980; second Golden Globe nomination), also The Last Temptation of Christ. Schrader’s directorial efforts regularly appear in competition at important film festivals. The Berlinale screened his films Hardcore (1979) and Light Sleeper (1992), while he competed for the Cannes Palme d’Or with the drama Patty Hearst (1988) and the stylised biopic about the famous Japanese writer Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985). Other films by this remarkable director include American Gigolo (1980) and the psychological drama featuring Nick Nolte, Affliction (1997).
