The first confirmed titles for the main competition at the 45th Karlovy Vary IFF

The most closely followed section at the Karlovy Vary festival is traditionally the international feature film competition. Presenting world, international, and European premieres, the section highlights the work of well-known filmmakers as well as talented debut directors.
Polish documentarist and renowned playwright Pawel Sala will present his first feature, Mother Teresa of Cats (Matka Teresa od kotów), as an international premiere at Karlovy Vary. He drew inspiration for his script from actual events taken from a black chronicle. Using an original cinematic narrative, Sala gradually uncovers the complicated relations within a seemingly normal family in order to bring to light the causes of a terrible crime. The talented Filip Garbacz, awarded Special Jury Mention for his role in the film Piggies (Świnki) at last year’s KVIFF, appears as one of the main characters.
Regularly cast by Patrice Chéreau, Pascal Greggory is one of the most accomplished French actors working today. In the psychological drama thriller Sweet Evil (L’enfance du mal) he portrays honorable judge Van Eyck who is one day unexpectedly visited by 15-year-old Céline, a girl with an angelic face and ambiguous intentions. Olivier Coussemacq’s feature debut, in which costar Anaïs Demoustier (Shooting Star at Berlinale 2010) is fully equal to the remarkable Greggory, will be presented at the KVIFF as an international premiere.
This year’s Official Selection - Competition of the Karlovy Vary IFF will feature two very different Czech films. The first film, 3 Seasons in Hell (3 sezóny v pekle), directed by Tomáš Mašín, was inspired by the life of Egon Bondy, one of Czechoslovakia´s best known writers. It will be the film’s international premiere.
The second competition film, also an international premiere, Kooky (Kuky se vrací), directed by Oscar winner Jan Svěrák, is an original and contemporary collage of scripted and animated story full of action scenes and witty dialogues. Svěrák’s previous film, Empties (Vratné lahve), won the festival’s Audience Award in 2007 and Special Jury Mention. In 1995 he won the Grand Prix - Crystal Globe with The Ride (Jízda).
