The Karlovy Vary festival will award legendary Russian film and theater actor, director, and producer Nikita Mikhalkov with the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema at the 45th Karlovy Vary IFF.
After studying acting at the Boris Shchukin Theater Institute and film direction at Moscow’s VGIK film school, Nikita Mikhalkov began his career as a director with the films At Home Among Strangers, Stranger at Home (1974), A Slave of Love (1975), Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano (1976), Five Evenings (1978), and Oblomov (1979). After Kinfolk (1981) and In Private (1983), he shot the Italian coproduction Dark Eyes (1987). His own TriTe Studio produced Close to Eden (1991), which took the Golden Lion at the Venice IFF and a Felix Award. The drama Burnt by the Sun (1994), offering an open look at modern Russian history, won an Academy Award for best Foreign Language Film. In 1998 he came out with the expansive historical fresco The Barber of Siberia. After falling silent for nearly ten years he directed the drama 12 (2007), an updated version of 12 Angry Men (1957), which won the Audience Award at the 2008 KV IFF. In 2007 he was awarded a Special Lion at Venice for the “consistent brilliance of [his] body of work.”
On the occasion of Nikita Mikhalkov receiving the Chrystal Globe, the 45th Karlovy Vary IFF will screen his latest picture Burnt by the Sun 2: Exodus (2010); as in many of his movies, he plays the lead here as well. Mikhalkov is the chairman of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation, and president of the Russian Culture Fund, the Moscow IFF, and the National Academy, which awards its yearly Golden Eagles.
The director was a guest at the 34th Karlovy Vary IFF, where he presented The Barber of Siberia, and 12 screened at the festival in 2008.
