Statement of the Documentary Jury

In recent years, there have been quite a few films that have focused on immigrants who sacrifice their families and endure extreme pain and isolation while working in foreign lands.
"Familia" stands apart in its ability to reveal how devastating this choice can be, and the personal consequences that result. As a viewer, one cannot help but be totally moved by the honesty, intelligence, and great courage demonstrated by the Barrientos family as they face such great personal upheaval.
We, the documentary jury, were deeply affected by the special relationship between the family and the filmmakers, Alberto Herskovits and Mikael Wistrom. The intimacy and social truths these filmmakers captured and then shared with us through this film are truly a gift.
