A Musical Odyssey at Karlovy Vary
June 22, 2011, 10:40 AM
With its section A Musical Odyssey, the Karlovy Vary IFF continues its presentation of the best current music films the genre has to offer. Both rousing and disturbing, The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye is a portrait of radical British artist Genesis P-Orridge (from the influential band Throbbing Gristle) which also describes the long-term “polysexual experiment” during which P-Orridge and his wife decided to undergo a series of operations in an endeavour to enter a hermaphroditic state together.
Fans of the idiosyncratic Icelandic scene will certainly welcome the documentary focusing on a private music festival, Backyard, featuring bands such as Múm and Hjaltalín. Swedish filmmakers embellished their documentary about a pop folk songwriter with animated sequences - The Extraordinary Ordinary Life of José González, and Stan Warnow, who was editor on Forman’s films Hair and Ragtime, will bring over Deconstructing Dad, a film about his father, the pioneer of electronic music Raymond Scott.
This year, for the first time, the films in the section A Musical Odyssey will be accompanied by live concerts. The traditional Aeroport club will vibrate to the sounds of Viennese electronic specialists from the film VINYL – Tales from the Vienna Underground. Once again Karlovy Vary town council is putting together an orchestral concert on the colonnade featuring major names in Polish film music: the event, held in the open air, is organised to coincide with the screening of the film Komeda, which profiles the prematurely deceased cool jazz pianist and composer of film soundtracks: the most famous is Krzysztof Komeda’s music for Polanski’s psychological horror, Rosemary’s Baby.
