Restoration of old life

July 3, 2011, 6:09 PM

The Israeli representative in the main competition, Restoration, tells a story about relationships between fathers and sons, new and old. The film follows a family of a man restoring antiques and his own life after the death of his business partner in a declining company.

“I was inspired by the relationship with my own father, short stories of Bernard Malamud and even walks through Tel Aviv where new buildings replace the old,” said scriptwriter Erez Kav-El at the press conference. The sympathy of the authors for the disappearing old world permeates the film’s atmosphere and rhythm. “We did not stop filming when an actor finished his lines, even when editing we left a couple of seconds in all takes, slowing the film down,” explained director Joseph Madmony.

The introverted main character is played by Iraqi-born Israeli actor Sasson Gabai, winner of the European film award for The Band´s Visit. “I like the old way of life so I really got into character. As a father I understand the development of the father-son relationship. You can say that Restoration is a simple small film. But under the simplicity is a whole different story,” said the actor, who will introduce the European premiere of this Crystal Globe contender.
