How to steal a jewel

July 5, 2011, 3:14 PM

The second film of director Andrea Molaioli will be shown in main competition today. Like his successful debut, The Girl by the Lake, his newest film, The Jewel, takes place in a small town that quietly watches on as a crime is committed. This time, the crime is corruption and fraud. The story of the dizzying rise and fall of a food company was inspired by the true story of Italian dairy giant Parmalat and its financial scandal.

The film tells the story of Leda company headed by two men, a manager and his accountant that gradually takes over the company. Both characters are played by famous Italian actors, festival guest and star of The Octopus, Remo Girone and Toni Servillo, winner of the European Film Award for The Deity. “It is important to realize that both characters are hostages of the system. They are not repulsive and in principle behave rationally,” said the director. “Preparing for the film, I studied the Parmalat case, but I also tried to understand the rules and language of the economic system. I have a feeling it is to a large extent built on technical terms understood only by selected few, who monopolize the right to decide.”
