Puppets in (im)proper hands

Canadian filmmaker Aaron Houston brought to Vary his mockumentary Sunflower Hour about four puppeteers auditioning for a children’s TV show. The film was screened in world premiere in the Forum of Independents section.

“I was watching a puppet show with my daughter and noticed the lead puppet was smarter than the others. I was surprised to see even children’s TV shows were ego-driven. I thought they were pure and moral. It is clear from the film what I think now,” said the director and scriptwriter about his inspiration for this sarcastic comedy about a group of loser puppeteers and porn producers moonlighting in children’s TV.

Huston was also inspired by American Idol and modeled his characters on contestants eliminated early in the competition. “I have also based my characters on people I know. Most people have problems, are bullied and insecure. When you approach it without prejudice, it is quite funny,” added the director, who takes two of the puppets to all screenings and parties in Vary.

The bloopers included on the future DVD should be pretty funny too, because the filming that took place mainly on weekends and cost EUR 20 000, produced a number of improvised scenes that never made into the movie.
