Film Odyssey Begins

June 30, 2012, 11:00 AM

The Story of Film: An Odyssey, a documentary film by Mark Cousins, hits the screens today. It will take film fans five days to see the fifteen hour masterpiece divided into five blocks. The screenings start every day at 8:30 and the film’s fascinating story of well-known and unknown history of cinematography will more than make up for the early start.

“I grew up in Belfast in the 70s, when it resembled a war zone, an atmosphere portrayed in yesterday’s Good Vibrations. I was a nervous kid, but I felt safe in movie theaters. It was as if film sucked me in and transported into a different world. So this documentary is a long thank you to film. It is a work of love. And partially of hatred – hatred of the limited discussions about film. They don’t mention West African films or films by amazing women directors. This hatred worked like rocket fuel, powering me the entire six years that I worked on the film,” Cousins told viewers at the film’s introduction. In the Small Hall he also showed a three meter long piece of paper covered by editing notes for the collected material that took his team two years to sort out.
