Either Way in Iceland
July 1, 2012, 5:00 PM
Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson’s impressive and minimalist debut Either Way opens Variety’s Ten European Directors to Watch. The director uses Island’s bare landscape as a backdrop for his intimate black comedy. The two main protagonists maintain roads in the depressing countryside when they find themselves at an important crossroads.
“The story is set in the 80s so I could isolate the characters from civilization. In today’s era of mobile phones a story like this wouldn’t work,” said the director. The entire film is carried by only four actors. “I wanted to make a good film, but because of money, I had to make it very intimate.”
The film includes a mysterious young woman. “I was trying to get the 80s atmosphere right. At that time, Icelandic films often used mysterious hitchhikers as a way of introducing the supernatural into their films. I also used a lot of music from that time” Sigurðsson told the audience after today’s screening.
