Western Civilization’s Wrinkles

Variety’s Ten European Directors to Watch introduces Wrinkles, a melancholic and unsettling animated drama, made in Spain by Argentinian director Ignacio Ferreras (pictured in self-portrait). His work shows influence by Sylvain Chomet with whom he worked on the nostalgic The Illusionist (2010) as animator.

Even though the director’s feature debut is visually simple, with traces of Japanese Manga, it brings a deep study of end of life using careful psychological portraits. The main protagonists are two elderly people that meet in a retirement home. Emilio is sorting through his life when he finds out the doctors hid his true diagnosis from him. His friend tries to distract him and ease his anxiety that inevitably comes with slow death. “It’s not a film about getting old in general, but about a specific way of dying typical for Western cultures, where people let their parents live out the rest of their lives in retirement homes,” said the director after today’s screening of his film.

The film is based on a comic book by Spanish Paco Roca. “The comic book author did an extensive research on retirement homes, so he had plenty of material,” said the director. “It was a long, arduous and at times stressful work. Right before the film was completed I told myself I’d never make another feature film. But now, one year later, thinks look different.”
