Socially Awkward Eater of Bird Food

July 5, 2012, 3:00 PM

The eagerly anticipated debut of one of the most promising Greek talens, Boy Eating the Bird’s Food, closes the festival’s Main Competition today. The film follows a young Athenian without a job, girlfriend and things to eat. “It’s not that hard to make films in Greece, because one can always get help from friends interested in filmmaking,” said director Ektoras Lygizos about the production of his minimalist film.

The radically intimate, Bressonesque movie is a fascinating visual puzzle about a desperate effort to maintain one’s freedom and dignity in a time of crisis.

The director wrote the role of the main character for Yannis Papadopoulos and he truly excels in it. “I finished my acting studies two years ago,” said the actor at today’s press conference, adding “until now I only acted on stage or in short films, Boy Eating the Bird’s Food is my first feature role.”
