Antonia Pozzi did not see a single one of her poems published in her lifetime, but now she has a biographical film about her: Antonia, an Italian-Greek co-production. Viewers can catch the world premiere today as part of the Official Selection. Although collections of the sensitive artist, who filled her lyric poems with her all-encompassing sadness, were published after her tragic death, they remain on the periphery of the canon of Italian literature.
“Italian high school students encounter Antonia Pozzi in their studies only tangentially, so we hope that our film will help raise awareness of this fascinating woman not just in our country, but also internationally,” said director Ferdinando Cito Filomarino in a press conference.
The film’s story follows the poet from the 1930s and depicts her coming of age and her loves. The period costumes and hairstyles made things difficult for Linda Carini, who played the main role. During the press conference, she revealed what she considered to be the key to understanding the psyche of this conflicted woman: “First of all, I had to get in sync with the period in which my character lived. Another thing important to me from an acting perspective was the music used in the film, which reflects Antonia’s inner self.”
