The Indian picture Umrika, which picked up the Audience Award at Sundance, received its European premiere on Saturday in KVIFF’s Official Selection – Out of Competition. The main character Rama, who sets out to seek his brother and in so doing come of age himself, is played by Suraj Sharma (22). In an interview, the actor, who achieved worldwide fame for his role in Ang Lee’s Life of Pi (2012), discusses what most appealed to him about the script of Umrika, 1980s nostalgia, and if – like his character – he ever dreamt of the US as a promised land.
