This year, American director Ryan Fleck celebrated his nation’s Independence Day, the Fourth of July, in an untraditional way: visiting the Czech Republic for the first time. Specifically, the film festival in Karlovy Vary. “I would like to thank you for choosing to spend your evening with an American road movie,” he told the audience assembled in the Grand Hall to see his new film about poker players, Mississippi Grind.
Fleck filmed this movie, like the successful independent drama Half Nelson, together with Anna Boden. Unfortunately, his co-director couldn’t make it to Karlovy Vary. “She recently had a baby,” Fleck explained. He was, however, joined by the brilliant Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn, who plays the film’s lead role, a loser and gambler.
