Film Selection 2009

The Karlovy Vary IFF presents over 220 feature films from all over the world every year. Apart from the films in the special retrospectives, most of the films are screened in the Czech Republic each year for the first time, many of them in their world, international or European premiere as well. This year again, the audience will have chance to see interesting retrospectives and focuses apart from the traditional program sections.

The Girl | Flickan
Director: Fredrik Edfeldt
Sweden, 2009, 98 min

Set in the early 1980s, during a rural Swedish summer, this beautifully crafted feature excels at depicting the private realms kids stealthily create when free of adult supervision as its unnamed heroine finds a way to get rid of her feckless aunt and take care of herself while her parents are away.

Here and There | Tamo i ovde
Director: Darko Lungulov
Serbia, Germany, USA, 2009, 90 min, EP

Serbian director Lungulov’s laid-back character study contrasts the adventures of an enterprising young Belgrade native in New York with the discoveries of an aging down-and-out New Yorker in Belgrade, its mordant Eastern European humor tempered by a gentler sense of postwar absurdity.

6K5 - 8.7., 22:00, Panasonic Cinema
The Children | The Children
Director: Tom Shankland
United Kingdom, 2008, 85 min

Something is seriously wrong with the kids, who start killing off the adults during an otherwise normal family outing. Clever, claustrophobic direction transforms what should have been an innocuous plan to spend the holidays at a remote country house into an alarming and thoroughly original chiller.

6K1 - 8.7., 10:00, Panasonic Cinema

Best known for video and installation work, Heerkens makes his feature directing debut by mounting 25 miniature cameras on a Jaguar XJS and shooting one of Europe’s finest actresses, Johanna ter Steege, in a one-sided, one-take phone conversation with the married lover who’s just jilted her.

After a prolonged stay in the U.S., a Hungarian teenybopper teaches his Communist-era peers about rock ‘n’ roll while trying to win the girl from the gang leader who took over while he was away in this fluffy but swinging musical romance, inspired by the early days of Magyar rocker Miklos Fenyo.
