Film Selection 2009

The Karlovy Vary IFF presents over 220 feature films from all over the world every year. Apart from the films in the special retrospectives, most of the films are screened in the Czech Republic each year for the first time, many of them in their world, international or European premiere as well. This year again, the audience will have chance to see interesting retrospectives and focuses apart from the traditional program sections.

A feared martial arts champion and breaker of women’s hearts is out to take revenge on the Man for his brother’s death and for supplying heroin to the local orphanage. This tribute and outstandingly entertaining parody of the 1970s blaxploitation genre was a huge hit with viewers at this year’s Sundance festival.

Dead Snow | Død snø
Director: Tommy Wirkola
Norway, 2009, 90 min

A group of medical students is getting ready to relax at a remote mountain cabin, and it looks as if this will just be another run-of-the-mill teenage slasher movie. Then all of a sudden we are hit with...  This humorous and spine-tingling zombie movie was a favorite at Sundance.

827 - 10.7., 24:00, Small Hall - Thermal
Mum & Dad | Mum & Dad
Director: Steven Sheil
United Kingdom, 2008, 85 min

Lena is a cleaner at Heathrow Airport. She misses the bus after work, but luckily her friend Birdie cheerfully says that Lena can spend the night at her family’s nearby house. Lena hardly suspects that she’s putting herself into mum’s and dad’s psychopathic hands. Although it begins like one of Mike Leigh’s social dramas, the movie quickly degenerates into a gory and perverse game of survival.

Sexykiller | Sexykiller
Director: Miguel Martí
Spain, 2008, 100 min

Dead bodies start turning up at a high-rent university campus, and it takes the police a long time to realize that the serial killer is the perfect combination of Paris Hilton and Hannibal Lecter... The term “fashion victim” inspired the moviemakers to create an original and eccentric comedy that blows fresh air into the tired stereotypes of the blood-drenched horror genre.

A Town Called Panic | Panique au village

Belgium, France, 2009, 75 min

Cowboy, Indian, and Horse are inseparable friends living together in a town called Panic. Evocative of childhood, the plastic figurines are brought to life via stop-motion animation. Full of eccentric gags, their irresistible adventures draw on the heritage of Belgian surrealism. One of the hits of the recent Cannes festival.

Yatterman | Yatterman
Director: Takashi Miike
Japan, 2008, 111 min

Opulent adventure, unrestrained destruction, garish colors, exhilarating antics, toy store superheroes, and gigantic robots with phallic contraptions and huge nipples – quite simply, the ultimate family film from Japan. Takashi Miike has finally arrived at the Karlovy Vary film festival!
