Exhibitions

  • Zuzana Mináčová – Life with the Camera

An exhibit presenting a major figure in Czech-Slovak photography. The Slovak artist, who has been a permanent resident of Prague since 1993, is possibly the best known documentary photographer of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which she first shot in 1968. The exhibit will also show her freestyle artistic work, from her erliest black-and-white series (Convergence, Time) to her documentary photography (Slovakia, a Visit – inspired by the Soviet invasion), as well as colour experiments and photo portraits of important figures of the art world. The set of more than 40 large-format photographs is a compelling testament to the times in which they were made, and to the turbulent events of the artist’s life and their considerable artistic quality.

Opening reception on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at 6 pm.

Open daily July 2-8, 2017, from 10 am to 7 pm.

  • Festival of Glass Arts in Karlovy Vary

In collaboration with the Curative Natural Resources and Colonnades Administration and the City of Karlovy Vary, and with the support of the Karlovy Vary Region, Minea Gallery – Carlsart is organizing the traditional Festival of Glass Arts from July 1 to August 31, 2017, at the Vřídlo Colonnade, now for the 17th consecutive year.

Held on the ground and first floors of the Vřídlo Colonnade, the Festival of Glass Arts is an annual overview of original contemporary glass by artists from the Czech Republic and abroad, this year as guests of an exhibit by the main artist. Artist Jiří Šuhájek is a widely respected glassworker who, at the age of 74, is still actively creating and teaching. In addition to graduating from Prague’s UMPRUM – the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design – under Prof. Stanislav Libenský in the 1960s, Jiří Šuhájek also studied at the Royal College of Art in London. The Moser glassworks in Karlovy Vary has produced many of his original designs over the last fifty years. A multi-metre, glass-and-metal statue by Jiří Šuhájek also graces the open area in front of the Moser glassworks, which has also lent its support to the Festival of Glass Arts and this year’s exhibit.

The exhibition architect is Václav Kouba, and the curator is Eva Hanyková. Admission is free of charge, daily from July 1 to August 31, 2017, 10 am to 6 pm. www.glassfest.cz
