KAISER 53 – multi-genre club in the Imperial Spa

The first multi-genre pop-up club during the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2018, Kaiser 53 opens its doors in the building of the historic Lázně 1, a favourite after-party destination for visitors to the KVIFF. The mastermind behind Kaiser 53 is regular festival participant Vladimir 518, who – with the help of label Bigg Boss – has come up with a project featuring the best from the contemporary domestic music scene. The whole concept, as well as the program for individual evenings, is put together in such a way as to allow visitors, after days of film, to be able to meet in a club setting, listen to quality music, or head to an unconventional party.

The spa building will take on a new look every evening, thanks not only to the program but also to the varied atmospheres which will be created by leading local VJs. For visitors of the festival, spending a night in the Kaiser 53 club is also the last chance to experience Lázně 1 in its original form, ahead of a planned reconstruction. The club will be open daily from 10 pm, with entry requiring a valid ticket. Tickets can be purchased on site (a very limited number at the main box office in Hotel Thermal) or online at https://tootoot.fm/cs/5adf248b8dbdd70a440a20a0/.

In the same place but with a new look and a new concept – meet the Moët Summer Lounge: a chill-out zone spread out over 250 m² right in the middle of the action on the terrace of Hotel Thermal. It will be open every day from 2 pm until midnight. Festival visitors who come to the Moët Summer Lounge will have the chance to taste Moët & Chandon champagne and other wines and spirits from the Moët Hennessy portfolio. They will also have opportunities to take part in cocktail workshops and hear some live music performances. They can even contribute to a good cause: for every purchase of a 20 cl bottle of Moët Impérial Mini at the bar during festival week, 53 crowns – marking the 53rd festival -  will go towards the AutTalk fund.

    Reflex Exhibit: Jiránek and Film

A thematic exhibition to mark what would have been the 80th birthday of a brilliant illustrator and humourist. Open throughout the festival. In the mid-1990s, at the Summer Film School in Uherské Hradiště, publicist Jan Lukeš asked Vladimír Jiránek if he could liven up the festival bulletin with some drawings. The artist agreed, and thus emerged a collection of some 50 drawings, previously unknown to the general public, related to film, filmmakers, actors and their audiences. To mark the occasion of the 80th birthday that Vladimír Jiránek would have celebrated just days before the opening of the Karlovy Vary festival, Reflex has arranged for an exhibition in Hotel Thermal that is sure to bring a smile to our faces while at the same time amaze us with the timelessness of nearly two decades of insider jokes about Czech filmmaking and much else besides.

  • Festival

Exhibition of documentary photography at the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary.

The role of photography changes depending on its theme, as well as the environs in which it is realized. Through the lens of the camera new stories and connections unfold, which both reflect society and document our memory of an event. The documentary is also the central theme of the photographic exhibition entitled Festival. The exhibition captures more than 30 years of the festival’s atmosphere, photographed by leading Czech photojournalists. The overall concept comprises images across genres, from portraiture and journalistic documentary to news reporting images from behind the scenes of the festival itself.

The exhibition complementing the 53rd International Film Festival will present more than a hundred photos. The work of renowned photographers such as Michal Čížek, Zuzana Mináčová, David W. Černý and others will all be represented.

The exhibition’s curator is Štěpánka Stein. From June 28 to September 9, 2018.
