Outsider Emil sets off from the north of Lapland to gather together the estate of his worldly brother Kenneth. He encounters the latter’s son Kevin, kept a secret until now, and a strong bond grows between these pure souls in a decayed world of shadowy business deals, brutality and crime.

Synopsis

In Lappish, “Bázo” means “idiot”, and this is the pejorative term people often use to describe the adult Emil, who lives with his father in a small village in the bleak north. Emil is a Myshkinesque idiot; he is slower than others, with simple feelings, yet a warm-hearted soul of integrity. His brother Kenneth is a different type altogether, a man of the world who travelled south to the boundless realm of cities, trade, attractive women, but also cruelty, distorted interpersonal relationships and crime. One day a letter arrives bearing news of Kenneth’s death, and Emil sets off with the aim of gathering together Kenneth’s estate. And this, as it turns out, includes not only a shiny Mercedes, an excavator, a rifle and money, but also his brother’s seven-year-old son Kevin, and dangerous links to the mafia.

About the director

Lars Göran Pettersson

Lars Göran Pettersson studied film editing and production at the Swedish state television company SVT. In the years 1972-1975 he was employed as a film editor and, from 1975 to 1989, he worked as a producer chiefly for SVT-Örebro, where he made a series of television programmes and films. He has been working freelance since 1989, living alternately in Sweden and Norway. He founded his own production company, Film Form AB, and he most often works as a screenwriter and director of documentary and feature films. Bázo (2003) is his second feature film - the first was Border Courier (Gränslots, 1990), set during the war in the border region between Sweden and occupied Norway.
