Synopsis

This untraditional, stylistically bold tragicomedy follows an eager yet untalented musician named Jon, who, in his attempt to extricate himself from his small-town life and everyday work routine, joins the alternative music group The Soronprfbs. The unpronounceable band is organized by the eccentric, talented, and unstable Frank, a musical genius who hides behind an enormous papier-mâché head that he never takes off. Although the weekend gig Jon signed up for results in permanent band membership, and despite the ill will of the other band members and even the loss of all his money, Jon sticks with the band. This playful movie was freely inspired by the life of cult musician Frank Sidebottom (comic legend Chris Sievey) and by Daniel Johnston and Captain Beefheart, other music-world outsiders. The director pays tribute to them all, as does the excellent Michael Fassbender in the role of Frank. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance IFF.
