Lila (14) and Janek (15) are besotted with each other. Despite this, Janek betrays his girlfriend, although he is willing to do anything to make it up to her. In this raw narrative, without offering any clear-cut moral judgement, Anna Kazejak asks how far a person would be willing to go for love.
Synopsis
Lila, a 14-year-old junior high student, and Janek, who’s a year older, are crazily in love. Despite this, Janek betrays her; although he’ll do anything to make it up to her, Lila can’t forgive him. She thinks up a plan and gives Janek twenty-four hours to carry it out, otherwise he will lose her forever. This raw narrative, set in contemporary Poland, focuses on a generation of lonely young people who are being brought up without clearly defined boundaries and without the necessary examples. The director tells her chilling tale leaving aside any clear-cut moral judgement, driven by an endeavour to fathom the behaviour of her protagonists, whose roles are portrayed with unsettling authenticity by young first-time actors. The filmmaker offers a powerful viewing experience and states: "We have to tell this story because there is nothing simpler than to denounce evil, and nothing more difficult than to attempt to understand it.”
About the director
Anna Kazejak (b. 1979, Bytom, Poland) studied film direction at PWSFTviT in Łódź. She gained international recognition early on with her student shorts Pulse (doc, 2003) and You Are There (2004). Together with two college friends she debuted with the much lauded three-part feature Ode to Joy (2005). After its premiere at the Rotterdam IFF the film was screened at various international festivals (also competing in KVIFF’s East of the West section). This was followed by the short A Few Simple Words (2007) and the mid-length documentary The Sidetrack (2009). Her first feature Flying Pigs (2010) was a huge box-office success in Poland. For HBO Poland she directed numerous episodes of the series "In Treatment” (2011–12). Her latest film The Word was premiered in the Generation section at this year’s Berlinale.
