A focused documentary monitoring the slow, inevitable advance of time upon Antonio and his wife Felisa, who have spent more than sixty years together. Having to negotiate steep staircases in their simple abode and carry out their various daily tasks is taking an increasing toll on their health. Will their love for one another help them face the hazards of old age, or will the thing they both fear the most – the time of parting – finally come?

Synopsis

Antonio and Felisa have spent their whole lives in a little house in the Spanish province of Teruel. Together they are one soul, one body, and even a short time apart causes them great anguish. Now they are elderly, their health is more fragile, and ordinary tasks increasingly require more effort. The world around them is also changing; the old couple now see their surroundings as a place of hidden dangers. A visit to the hospital becomes an ordeal as they negotiate its cold labyrinthine corridors; the narrow passageways and steep staircases in their humble home present fresh obstacles to be overcome on a daily basis. The prospect of moving into a retirement home is a real threat they have to live with.… This film reflection about enduring love confronting the hazards of old age filters through an extremely broad palette of emotional hues. Paralluelo’s documentary, with its clear directorial vision and various staged elements, presents a focused portrait of an aging married couple, and also offers a more universal statement on the feelings of people who, towards the end of their lives, are overwhelmed by the creeping burden of time.
