The life of an uncompromising HR manager named Emilie changes the instant she witnesses the suicide of one of the staff. The investigation of the case becomes a moral test for a woman whose actions, although motivated by her unlimited devotion to work, have caused grief for many an employee.

Synopsis

Resolute, cold, hard – words to describe Emilie, an uncompromising manager working for Esen, a large multinational company. As the head of human resources she’s not exactly the favorite member of the team, but her situation becomes intensely complicated the moment she, like many others, witnesses the suicide of one of the staff. The complex investigation of the crisis becomes a moral test of responsibility for the protagonist, who up till now, in her limitless devotion to work, introduced measures that caused misery for more than one employee. In the competitive world of corporate society, the pressure is unrelenting, and maintaining one’s integrity can become a struggle that’s not so easy to win. Due to its chosen topic, Corporate offers hard-hitting, ever-current testimony about relations between the individual and the system that are so often fraught with difficulty. And while this spare narrative allows for standout performances, substantive and effective work with cinematic resources emphasizes the film’s modern style.

About the director

Nicolas Silhol

Nicolas Silhol (b. 1976) shot his first short movie In Paradisum in 2004 while studying screenwriting at La Fémis film school in Paris. His second short Tous les enfants s’appellent Dominique took the main prize at Toronto 2008, and his third, Love Thyself (L’amour propre, 2010), was screened in Cannes’ Critics’ Week. As the son of an HR consultant and management professor teaching at a business school, the director had an inside track on interpersonal relations at the workplace; it’s therefore no surprise the business environment became fodder for his feature debut Corporate (2016).
