It’s 1864 and a wounded soldier of the enemy Union Army finds himself ensconced in a closed community of pupils and supervisors at a young ladies’ seminary somewhere in Virginia. During his convalescence, the compassion evinced by the women who receive and care for him begins to warp into jealousy and rivalry for his favor. The outstanding Nicole Kidman shines in this remake of the 1971 morality play.

Synopsis

At a secluded young ladies’ seminary somewhere in Virginia during the American Civil War, a handful of young charges, teacher Edwina, and owner Martha give refuge to a wounded soldier from the enemy Union Army. In the middle of the woods, reached by the sound of nearby skirmishes and the rare prisoner convoy, they dress his wounds and care for him. As the soldier convalesces, sexual tensions among the pupils and the adult women highten, creating a dangerous rivalry that leads to the breaching of social taboos – a result of the demoralizing effects of war. Sofia Coppola took inspiration from the plot of Don Siegel’s movie of the same name starring Clint Eastwood (1971). For this retelling of the same story from the viewpoint of a closed female community, the decision to control costs allowed the writer-director to secure a superb cast led by Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, and Colin Farrell.

About the director

Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola (b. 1971, New York City), who started her film career as an actor, is the daughter of director and producer Francis Ford Coppola. She studied painting and photography but has thus far realized her artistic ambitions to her fullest potential as a director and screenwriter. Her feature debut The Virgin Suicides (2000) was presented at Cannes in Directors’ Fortnight. She received rave reviews (and an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay) for her second picture Lost in Translation (2003), a small-scale morose comedy about two lonely people who meet up in a Tokyo hotel. The biopic Marie Antoinette (2006) premiered in the main competition at Cannes. Another bittersweet comedy from the writer-director, Somewhere (2010), won Venice’s Golden Lion. The Bling Ring (2013), a crime story about a group of teenage burglars, was selected to open Cannes’ Un Certain Regard.
