The life of a three-member, middle-class family fundamentally changes with the arrival of six-year-old Ilja, a withdrawn little boy adopted from a children’s home… Displaying mise-en-scène mastery, debuting Lithuanian director Giedrė Beinoriūtė brings us a taut psychological drama adapted from the award-winning novel of the same name, in which she ramps up the tension in an economical yet highly effective way.

Synopsis

A middle-class couple, Izabelė and Liudas, live in their rural house with their son Gailius, who suffers from epilepsy. One day Izabelė talks her husband into adopting six-year-old Ilja, a headstrong yet withdrawn little boy from a children’s home. With the arrival of the new addition, family life starts to change drastically for all of them… This taut psychological drama by debuting filmmaker Giedrė Beinoriūtė is an adaptation of the award-winning novel of the same name by Laura Sintija Černiauskaitė. Using an economical but highly effective approach, the director ramps up the tension, and her conception of the mise-en-scène is masterful as well. Beinoriūtė states: “Breathing into Marble is about an attempt to warm up stone. It may be impossible, but it’s worth trying.”
