Regulations

43rd Karlovy Vary IFF 2008 (July 4-12, 2008)

Article 1

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is a non-specialised competitive festival recognised by FIAPF. Its aim is to contribute to the development and promotion of artistic cinema and film industry.

Article 2

The festival is organised by Film Servis Festival Karlovy Vary a.s., located at:

Article 3

The 43rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will take place in Karlovy Vary from July 4 to 12, 2008.

Article 4

The festival program involves:

a) a non-specialised international competition of feature films (premieres only)
b) an international competition of full-length and short documentary films
c) the competitive sections East of the West and Forum of Independents
d) non-competitive informative film programs, focuses, retrospectives, homage profiles and other accompanying events approved by the Film Servis Festival Board

Article 5

Only works produced after the January 1, 2007 can be included in the competitive sections. In order to be eligible for selection and invitation to participate in the competition of feature films, it is obligatory that these films have not been previously shown in an international competition of another film festival.  The films in competition of feature films have to be presented as World, International or European Premieres.

Article 6

Only English subtitled 35mm prints in good technical condition can be accepted into the international competition of feature films. All films will be provided with Czech electronic subtitles. The production of the Czech subtitles is the responsibility of the Festival.

Article 7

The selection of the films is carried out by a commission of experts functioning as an advisory body to the Artistic Director. The commission, under the direction of the Artistic Director, determines the program schedule and sets the screening order for all films.
No film selected may be withdrawn from the festival program after its participation has been officially confirmed by the producer or World Sales company.

Article 8

English subtitled prints of selected films must be sent to the festival by the June 13, 2008. This deadline must be strictly observed. It is obligatory for the participant to follow the shipping instructions, which accompany notification of inclusion of a film into the 43rd Karlovy Vary IFF program.
Prints sent in accordance with the festival’s shipping instructions and received will be shown at the festival. No other print will be accepted.

Article 9

Unless negotiated otherwise, costs related to the transportation of the film, promotional materials and insurance from the country of origin to the Customs Office in Prague are the responsibility of the participant.
Costs related to the insurance of the film print against loss or complete or partial damage for the period after it is received by the festival until its return to the delivery agent are the responsibility of the festival (according to appendix 1 of FIAPF international regulations). In case of damage or loss of a print during the festival, the festival is only responsible for the costs involved in making a new print based on the current laboratory rates for ordering a standard print.
The costs related to the transportation of the film back to the sender are the responsibility of the Festival. Complaints regarding the technical condition of the returned print must be sent at the latest 1 month after its receiving.

Article 10

For each selected film, the festival must receive detailed documentation by the deadline, including: a synopsis of the film, stills of the film, a photo of the director, a biography and filmography of the director, an original dialogue list and its translation into English, a full list of artistic and technical credits, and at least two English subtitled DVDs of the film or an English subtitled videotape.
The participants are also expected to provide the festival with excerpts of the film on a BETA cassette (PAL version) in order to facilitate the promotion of the film during the festival.

Article 11

For each film accepted into the competition, the President of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and the festival´s Artistic Director invite a two-member delegation for a period of four days. Their accommodation costs are covered by the festival. Transportation costs are the delegates’ responsibility. The President of the Festival can make exception to this rule.

Article 12

In accordance with FIAPF international regulations, an International Jury will be comprised of prominent representatives of culture, theory, criticism, as well as filmmakers and producers. Three international juries will be established, one for each statutory competitive section, charged with judging films shown in the competition of feature films, in the competition of documentaries, and in the competitive section East of the West.
The Jury members must not have participated in the making of any film in the competition they are judging. All Jury members are sworn to secrecy.
The President of the Festival, the Artistic Director or their representative may attend jury deliberations but will take no part in the voting.

Article 13

The International Jury is obliged to award the following prizes in the feature film category:

  • Grand Prix - Crystal Globe and 30,000 USD awarded to the best feature film. The financial award is shared equally by the director and producer of the award-winning film. This award may not be attributed ex-aequo.
  • Special Jury Prize and 20,000 USD. The financial award is shared equally by the director and producer of the award-winning film. This award may not be attributed ex-aequo.
  • Best Director Award
  • Best Actress Award
  • Best Actor Award

Only one of these awards may be attributed ex-aequo.

Additionally, the Jury may award up to a maximum of two

  • Special Jury Mentions

The Jury cannot award more than two prizes to the same film.


To the documentary films presented in competition, the Documentary Jury has to award:

  • Best Documentary Film under 30 minutes long (5,000 USD)
  • Best Documentary Film over 30 minutes long (5,000 USD) 

The Documentary Jury may also award two

  • Special Jury Mentions, that means one in each category.


The East of the West Jury will present:

  • East of the West Award (10,000 USD)

and may also award one

  • Special Mention


Award-winners are expected to attend the Closing ceremony and to mention the award as announced, nationally as well as internationally, in their publicity and promotional material.

Article 14

The President of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival makes decisions in case of unclear situations or cases unforeseen in these regulations in conformity with the international regulations.

Article 15

Participation in the Festival implies agreement with the regulations set out herein.
