Six stories (mediated by four dramas, one documentary and one animated film) offer a glimpse of modern life as lived by ordinary people in several countries of the former Eastern Bloc.

Synopsis

Six filmmakers from the former Eastern Bloc got together to make a film comprising segments based on the theme "generations". Although each of the five stories (animated micro-etudes by Estonian form the sixth) is chiefly about young people, other themes include intergenerational confrontation and the state of the country in which the story is set. The Bulgarian director points to the extent to which her country continues to uphold tradition (The Ritual); the Romanian film demonstrates how deeply rooted bribery is in the country (Turkey Girl); the testimony of two little girls from different areas of Mostar, marked by the recent war, raises the issue of possible peaceful understanding in the future (Birthday); the Hungarian episode has psychoanalytical undertones (Shortlasting Silence), and the whole project is rounded off with an amusing tale about a temperamental female tram driver from Belgrade (Fabulous Vera).

Six young directors were involved in Lost and Found - Six Glances of a Generation, co-produced by the German Federal Culture Foundation:
The Ritual: Nadezhda Koseva (b. 1974, Sofia, Bulgaria) has been making short features and documentaries since 1997.
Turkey Girl: Cristian Mungiu (b. 1968, Iasi, Romania) has made a number of shorts; he has also worked in production and as a screenwriter.
Birthday: Jasmila Zbanich (b. 1974, Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina), has been making documentaries and short features since 1995. Her documentary on the war in Bosnia, Red Rubber Boots, was screened in Karlovy Vary in 2000.
Shortlasting Silence: Kornél Mundruczó (b. 1975, Gödöllö, Hungary) came out with his feature-length debut Pleasant Days (Szép napok) in 2001.
Fabulous Vera: Stefan Arsenijević (b. 1977, Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro), actor and director, has made seven short features and two documentaries since 1997.
Gene+Ratio: Mait Laas (b. 1970, Tallinn, Estonia) has made several animated films since 1997; he has written scripts for video clips and reviews of short films.
