Renata is a freethinking twentysomething who doesn’t really know what she wants. Her wanderings around San Francisco just seem like part of a greater desire for endless escape. This untraditional relationship drama is California filmmaker Joshua Moore’s debut, inspired by the French New Wave and the films of John Cassavetes.

Synopsis

Renata is a young woman who is dangerous to be around and is even a threat to herself. She feels best when she doesn’t have to control herself and when someone reacts to her spontaneous ideas. One would think she needs help but, considering her behavior, this is rarely the message that comes across. Sooner or later those close to her are rightfully put off by her excessively dissolute lifestyle and tendency to lie. So she traipses around San Francisco without heading anywhere or consciously looking for anything. The point of the film is not its dramatic plot but the impression of absolute authenticity and the possibility of intimately approaching a character who is portrayed with all her shortcomings, like the protagonists in the films of John Cassavetes. Despite all the work’s wistfulness there are also clear traces of anxiety. It shows that even freedom can be depressing and that the ability to "fly” doesn’t necessarily mean happiness. Despair wells up from the heroine’s unsettled lifestyle, but the movie also gives reasons to believe that she will not lose her way in life despite all the obstacles.

About the director

Joshua Moore (USA) graduated from Los Angeles Film School and San Francisco State University. He worked for Michael Douglas and Francis Ford Coppola. In 2000 he shot the short film A Happy Death and another short film in 2005 entitled The Day of Adele. He is currently associate programmer of the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival. For his feature directorial debut I Think It’s Raining he also served as screenwriter and producer. Prior to filming, he and lead actress Alexandra Clayton held "intense workshop-like collaborations” over the course of a year in order to work out the lead character, Renata. Apart from filmmaking, Joshua also enjoys riding his vintage motorcycle along the Northern California coastline.
