The hero of Vinterberg’s disturbing and evocative drama is 40-year-old Lucas (the excellent Mads Mikkelsen) who is trying to get his life back together after a difficult divorce, and to strengthen his relationship with his son Marcus. Little does he suspect that an innocent lie has sown the seeds of mistrust among their cohabitating community of friends. He will be forced to fight not only for his dignity but for his very life.

Synopsis

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg has come out with another disturbing and evocative drama whose core interpersonal relationships are put through an endurance test. This time around the hero of his picture is 40-year-old Lucas, who is trying to get his life back together after a difficult divorce, and to reestablish his relationship with his son Marcus. But things don’t go quite like he imagined. Before Lucas can catch his breath, a seemingly innocent lie, fluttering like a snowflake, begins to infiltrate a cohabitating community of friends: shocked and disturbed, the seeds of mistrust have been sewn. The hunt, which all the men join for a bit of male bonding, becomes a metaphor for the ruthless baiting of an innocent human being. In a film that combines realism with powerful camerawork and excellent acting, Mads Mikkelsen is superb in the role of Lucas. At this year’s Cannes IFF he was rightly presented the Best Actor Award.

About the director

Thomas Vinterberg

Thomas Vinterberg (b. 1969, Copenhagen) shot his first film at age 16, and three years later he was accepted to the National Film School of Denmark. In 1995 he and Lars von Trier came out with the Dogme 95 manifesto, and Vinterberg’s second feature, The Celebration, (Festen, 1998), shot according to the rules of the manifesto, took the Jury Prize at the Cannes IFF. Vinterberg then shot two English language movies: It’s All About Love (2003) and Dear Wendy (2005 – Best Direction at the Moscow IFF). He returned to Denmark in 2007 with the comedy When a Man Comes Home (En mand kommer hjem). In 2010 Submarino was presented in competition at the Berlinale and in the KVIFF program. His latest film, The Hunt, competed this year at Cannes.
