Woody Allen envisaged his new film as a kaleidoscope of tragicomic lives. This time around, the world-famous director found the ideal setting for a motion picture full of international movie stars: the Eternal City – according to the filmmaker, it’s simply too big to have just one plotline express everything about it. In Allen’s version, Rome becomes a city full of whimsical stories that deserve to be told.

Synopsis

An elderly American couple fly to Rome to meet their daughter’s Italian fiancé, but the girl’s neurotic father – an opera director – doesn’t take to the young man. Antonio, an Italian man from the provinces, arrives in Rome with his new wife hoping to impress his relatives – but he ends up in the company of a prostitute willing to fulfill his every desire. Meanwhile, the life of an ordinary Roman named Leopold gets a jolt when a crowd mistakes him for a movie star. And while on vacation in the Eternal City, a middle-aged American architect has the most romantic adventure of his life.… Woody Allen envisaged his new film as a kaleidoscope of human lives that mixes comedy and romance – his standard fare. This time around, the world-famous director chose the Italian capital as the ideal setting for a motion picture full of international movie stars – according to the filmmaker, Rome is simply too big to have just one plotline express everything about it. In Allen’s version, the city becomes a place full of lighthearted stories that deserve to be told.

About the director

Woody Allen

Woody Allen (b. 1935, New York) is currently one of the most highly valued American filmmakers. In the 1970s he created an image for himself as an original creator of writer-director comedies in which he generally took the lead, portraying the uncertain and neurotic bespectacled hero. Annie Hall (1977 – Academy Award for direction and script) brought out the more serious side of his talent, and he developed this trend with the relationship mosaics Manhattan (1979), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986 – Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay), and Husbands and Wives (1992), among others. In the past decade Allen has alternated psychological dramas in the style of Match Point (2005) with lighter projects such as Scoop (2006), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), Whatever Works (2009), and Midnight in Paris (2011 – Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay).
