And despite the fact that it is strictly forbidden to bring the inmates anything from the outside, she finds a way of smuggling him in some new shoes. Palme d’Or for Best Short Film at the 65th Cannes IFF.
Synopsis
The year is 1984, the beginning of the war between the Turkish army and Kurdish partisans. A young woman named Zeynep, who lives with her three children in Diyarbakır, is going to visit her husband in prison. But only Turkish is allowed to be spoken in prison and Zeynep only speaks Kurdish – she will not be able to say a single word to her husband. Nevertheless, she finds a way of smuggling him in some new shoes despite the strict prohibition against bringing prisoners anything from the outside. This intimate movie took the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film at the 65th Cannes IFF and was nominated for a European Film Award.
About the director
Rezan Yeşilbaş (b. 1977, Diyarbakır, Turkey) graduated from the film and television department of Istanbul’s Marmara University in 2008. He has worked with Turkish director Zeki Demirkubuz, serving as his executive producer on Envy (Kıskanmak, 2008) and as first assistant director on Inside (Yeraltı, 2012). He completed The Judgment (Hüküm), the first part of his "Trilogy of Women,” in 2008. Silent is the second segment of the trilogy.
