Synopsis

Tom, a young advertising copywriter, heads to a funeral on a country farm someplace in Québec. Upon arriving, he’s shocked to discover that no one knows who he is, nor who he was to the young man who died. The brother of the deceased initiates a dangerous and perversely manipulative game – a game whose goal is to protect his mother and the family name. The family’s past hides considerable darkness that bodes nothing but ill. Enfant terrible of Canadian film Xavier Dolan has shot a psychological thriller based on the play by well-known Québecois author Michel Marc Bouchard, and once again demonstrates his supreme talents as a director. Visually and musically captivating, the movie takes us to a place we’d rather hide from others – a place where life is a burden and the days hurt, and where internal truths rise to the surface. Screened at last year’s Venice festival, Tom at the Farm is the fourth film by a young and original creator who also took on the role of Tom.

About the director

Xavier Dolan (b. 1989, Québec, Canada) is the son of Québecois actor Manuel Tadros. He has appeared onscreen since age 4, when he acted in commercials, and he has continued to act while directing, for both film and TV. His own movies command well-deserved attention at international film festivals, with his debut leading the way: I Killed My Mother (J’ai tué ma mère, 2009), Canada’s choice for the Oscars and Césars, was presented at Cannes in 2009 in the Directors’ Fortnight, where it won three awards. Then came Heartbeats (2010 – Open Eyes, KVIFF 2010), Laurence Anyways (2012), and Tom at the Farm. His latest film, Mommy, joined the main competition this year at Cannes.
