Luisa and Erika have had only dire experiences with men, but they still tend to bear all the guilt themselves. What has to happen in order for them to change their attitudes and give themselves a new lease on life? Based on real events, this film tells a story about relationships which bring not only exhilaration, but also destruction.

Synopsis

Two young women, Luisa and Erika, have only had bad experiences with men, but they are still unable to break free of the power men hold over them. Indeed, their inability to goad themselves into action might very well lead to tragedy. What has to happen in order for them to change their lives for the better? And isn’t it too late? This nonlinear account of the relationship between an aspiring actress, her husband and her new friend intersects an important narrative line relating to Luisa’s psychiatric therapy, which also incorporates a storyline involving her doctor’s infatuation with his young female patient. The fragility and candour of this unusual film are derived in part from a singular filmmaking approach, where Ivan Vojnár allows the initial ideas to develop for a considerable period of time, yet he encourages spontaneous improvisation on set. In this, his latest film to date, he juggles real events and pure fiction while, at the same time, cultivating themes from his previous works. The ambiguity of this eloquent tale is heightened by the heroine’s unreliable narration, which relativises the film’s plot.

Ivan Vojnár

Ivan Vojnár (b. 1942, Žilina, Czechoslovakia) studied cinematography at FAMU (1965), then worked as a cameraman on several Czechoslovak documentary and feature films, also teaming up with the likes of Drahomíra Vihanová and Karel Vachek. During the 1980s he began writing and directing his own material (e.g. the documentary profile of mime artist Bolek Polívka A Dream about Pierrot (1988). His documentary essay on patients in psychiatric care In the Garden (1995) won an award at KVIFF, which has also screened some of his other films (e.g. Insomnia, 1993, Remembering, 2007, Cinematherapy, 2010). Prophets and Poets (2000) was screened at the prestigious Rotterdam fest, which also premiered his feature debut, the respected The Way Through the Bleak Woods (1997). He followed this up with the enigmatic Forest Walkers (2003) and My Husband’s Women (2009).
