Chelli looks after her mentally disabled sister Gabby on her own. When she is forced to place her in a day care centre, a void is left in her life which is filled by young Zohar. His arrival proves to be the catalyst which opens up the constrictive and ambivalent relationship between the sisters. This visually effective film about the complexities of human interaction was screened this year at Cannes.
Synopsis
Chelli is a carer for her mentally disabled sister Gabby. When the social worker finds out that Gabby is being left at home on her own and threatens to take her away, Chelli decides to place her sister in a day care centre. The latter’s absence creates a void, however, Chelli can now welcome a man into her life. Zohar appears on the scene, although his presence ultimately proves to be the catalyst which opens up the symbiotic yet constrictive bond that exists between the sisters. The boundaries separating love, sacrifice, solicitude and dependence begin to merge together. The talented Israeli director focuses on the sisters’ ambivalent relationship and raises the issue of the self-destructive tendency of sound individuals to neglect their own lives in the interests of other people. As the joint effort of director Asaf Korman and his wife, the actress Liron Ben Shlush (Chelli), who also wrote the screenplay, this visually effective film tells a subtle and poetic story of the complexities of human interaction.
About the director
Asaf Korman (b. 1982, Tel Aviv) has been making films and music since he was sixteen. His shorts have been well received and awarded at international film festivals. He studied at the Minshar School of Arts and his graduate film Death of Shula (Mota shel Shula) was selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2007. He is currently one of Israel’s most sought-after film editors and has worked on such films as Big Bad Wolves (dir. Navot Paposhado, Aharon Keshales) and Jaffa (dir. Keren Yedaya), the later of which competed at Cannes in 2009, as well as The Slut (dir. Hagar Ben Asher, 2011) and God’s Neighbors (dir. Meni Yaesh, 2012), both screened during Critics’ Week at the Cannes IFF. His feature debut Next to Her was also shown at Cannes this year, this time as part of Directors’ Fortnight.
