Socorro Nobre is a woman sentenced to a long term behind bars. She alleviates the monotony of everyday prison life by writing letters to famed sculptor Frans Krajcberg, who came to Brazil from Europe after losing his entire family during the Nazi terror. The film is a celebration of life and human patience.


Synopsis

Socorro Nobre is a woman who has been sentenced to a long prison term and she’s doing time under strict surveillance in a Bahia prison. She alleviates the boredom of her daily life by writing letters to famous sculptor Frans Kracjberg. He left Europe for Brazil after losing his entire family during the Nazi occupation of WW2. This black-and-white documentary is a celebration of life and human patience. The movie has won numerous international awards including Best Documentary at France’s FIPA D’OR Liege – the International Festival of Audio-Visual Programs; and it took the same award at the festival in Liége, Belgium and at Chile’s festival of short film. Life Somewhere Else also received a Special Mention at the Rio de Janeiro festival.

About the director

Walter Salles

Walter Salles (b. 1956) focuses in his films mainly on questions of exile, wandering and the search for identity. Behind the Sun (Abril Despedacado) picked up the prize for Second Best Foreign Film from the National Board of Review. In 1998 Central Station (Central do Brasil) won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Best Foreign Language Film from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. His other films have also received awards.
