Punk devotee Enn would love to find a girl. And maybe he has after meeting the ethereal Zan (Elle Fanning), who considers punk to be “from another colony,” which isn’t the only indication that the pair hail from different planets... Based on the story of the same name by Neil Gaiman, John Cameron Mitchell’s intergalactic fusion of romcom and musical even sees Nicole Kidman passing as a rebel.

Synopsis

Great Britain, 1977. The celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee are in full swing, the punk anti-establishment resistance is reaching its peak, and, somewhere amid all this social mayhem, we find Enn, a teenage schoolboy with two objectives: to get a band together and find a girlfriend. The second of these might be within his reach when he crashes a very peculiar party and meets Zan, a naïve creature who regards punk as being “from another colony”. This misunderstanding is only the first indication that the young lovers hail from different planets... John Cameron Mitchell, who was previously fêted for his debut, the unbridled musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, gets back in the groove in his current film How to Talk to Girls at Parties. In an intergalactic fusion of romcom and musical based on the short story by Neil Gaiman, the celestially exquisite Elle Fanning gives a superb performance, as does Nicole Kidman in the role of a punk guru, for whom no expletive is too obscene.

About the director

John Cameron Mitchell

John Cameron Mitchell (b. 1963, El Paso, Texas, USA) has been acting on the stage since his childhood (including Broadway productions). In 1998 he teamed up with Stephen Trask to write the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, whose main role he also pulled off with aplomb. Three years later the play was made into a film that won several awards at Sundance. His subsequent picture Shortbus (2006) premiered at Cannes. His next film Rabbit Hole (2010) secured a Best Actress Oscar nomination for the outstanding Nicole Kidman. The director also collaborated with Kidman on his current work, How to Talk to Girls at Parties (2017), which likewise played to Cannes audiences.
