My Friend Larry Gus

Documentary Films - Out of Competition 2015 / My Friend Larry Gus / Greece 2015

This unconventional movie, clearly no standard portrait, focuses on the director’s friendship with a spontaneous Greek musician nicknamed Larry Gus, who was recently signed by the independent DFA Records label. The film is conceived as a playful probe into the soul of an eternal child who, even as he approaches 30, is happiest goofing off with friends, uncovering his background, and thinking of new ways to experiment with music.

Synopsis

In 2006 Pananagiotis Melidis, an 18-year-old from the town of Veria in northern Greece, decided to dedicate himself to music. He invented the pseudonym Larry Gus and began mixing traditional Greek musical motifs with dance rhythms and electronica, and the results were intriguing. Almost a decade later his good friend Vasilis Katsoupis decided to shoot a movie about him – a work that is spontaneous, wild, vaguely vulgar, punk, joyful, totally open, and direct. A style that most faithfully corresponds to the subject’s unique character. This unconventional movie, clearly no standard portrait, focuses on the director’s friendship with the passionate musician, who was recently signed by the independent DFA Records label. The merely occasional use of Larry Gus concert footage suggests that the film is actually a playful probe into the soul of an eternal child who, even as he approaches 30, is happiest goofing off with friends, uncovering his background, and thinking of new ways to experiment with music.
