Jumpman

Official Selection - Competition 2018 / Podbrosy / Russia, Lithuania, Ireland, France 2018

Young Oksana put Denis in a baby box when he was an infant. Sixteen years later she steals him away from a children’s home, intent on making amends for her neglect. Denis, however, has no idea of the heavy price to be paid for his mother’s favour: the fragile boy has one unusual quality which Oksana has no qualms about exploiting.

Jumpman

Synopsis

As in his previous film Zoology the inimitable Ivan I. Tverdovskiy examines the life of a lonely individual who has been unable to fully integrate himself into society. The director criticises its warped system through the fate of fragile Denis, whom young Oksana put in a baby box when he was an infant. Sixteen years later she steals him away from a children’s home, intent on making amends for her maternal neglect. Denis, however, has no idea of the heavy price to be paid for his mother’s favour: the boy has one unusual quality which luxury-loving Oksana has no qualms about exploiting. With its focused narrative, Tverdovskiy’s drama encourages a metaphorical interpretation and offers a thought-provoking meditation on the ethos of Russian society.
