Soon after the wedding, newlyweds Molly and Tim move into her deceased father’s residence. With her husband always traveling, fragile Molly begins to be tormented by demonic memories of her childhood. In that creepy house, somewhere on the border between insanity and obsession, a mysterious evil lurks.
Synopsis
Years ago, Eduardo Sánchez and Dan Myrick redefined the horror genre with their film The Blair Witch Project, establishing that it’s possible to conjure up the most horrifying atmosphere even without the help of digital effects and gallons of fake blood. Lovely Molly brings this method to perfection. By combining a classic mise en scène with the documentary aesthetic of an amateur video camera, the director has created a powerful portrait of a lonely woman who must face fears rising out of the darkness and from her own obsessed mind. Soon after the wedding, newlyweds Molly and Tim move into her parents’ old house. With her husband always traveling, Molly is forced to spend most of her evenings alone, comforted by rare visits from her older sister or a glass of good wine. What was initially an idyll, however, soon changes into a claustrophobic battle for survival after Molly realizes that she is not actually alone. In the shadowy recesses of the empty manor lurks something that should have vanished long ago – specters of death and a forgotten past that begin revealing the darkest corners of Molly’s disturbed psyche.
About the director
Eduardo Sánchez (b. 1968, Cuba) studied television production at Montgomery College in Maryland and took a degree in film production from the University of Central Florida. He began making movies at age 16, including the award-winning independent feature Gabriel’s Dream. In 1999 he and Daniel Myrick wrote and directed The Blair Witch Project, which launched a new horror (sub)genre. Horror has also been the lifeblood of his subsequent films as well (Altered, 2006; Seventh Moon, 2008), but Lovely Molly pushes his style further toward a carefully crafted, intimate record of the breakdown of a personality, reminiscent of Polanski’s Repulsion or Rosemary’s Baby.
